Live Oak —
The Arc North Florida will hold its 15th Annual Lawnmower Race Saturday at John’s Lawn Equipment in Live Oak. The event will begin at 9:30 a.m. with registration, followed by the race at 10 a.m.
According to the Arc, this event is held each year to promote awareness of the needs of people with developmental and intellectual disabilities in the local community. The race serves as a fundraiser to compensate program expenses not reimbursed by state and federal programs.
The race will be held at 1629 Ohio Avenue North, Live Oak. John’s Lawn Equipment will provide lawnmowers for teams or individuals to use for the race. This year’s racing event is in conjunction with John’s Lawn Equipment’s Customer Appreciation Day. The Boys Scouts will be selling lunch from 10:30 a.m to 2:30 p.m.
Individuals may join in the competition as a soloist or as a team for an entrance fee of $100. Individual racers will complete a 1/8 mile track. In four person heats, the first rider to complete the track will compete in a run-off to to name an individual winner. The individual winner will be presented with a trophy.
Teams will compete in a relay style race. An entrance fee of $250 is requested per team. The first rider from each team will complete one lap around a small track and will then quickly exchange drivers before completing another lap. This process will repeat until all team members have completed a lap around the course. The winner of the race will go on to compete in a run-off to name the team champion. A trophy will be given to each member of the winning team.
In an effort to make the races more challenging and fun, each individual and team members will be required to stop at pit stops along the track and complete designated activity that mostly relates to the business sponsoring the pit stop. Once the activity has been completed, the driver will then return to their mower and advance to the next pit stop. Drivers will repeat the cycle until the course is completed.
“Every year event is so much fun and brings together the community in support of The Arc North Florida and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities,” said Janet Sampson, Arc development assistant. “We want to invite everyone to come on out to John's on Saturday to watch your favorite business race around the track. We also have some awesome raffle items that will be given away right after the races.”
In case the event is rained out, it will be on April 6. Follow the Arc North Florida on Facebook or call the office at 386-362-7143 on Friday for updates.
