Suwannee County commissioners to decide next county attorney

Live Oak — The Suwannee County Board of County Commissioners recently announced their efforts to accept resumes for the county attorney position. The contract with current County Attorney Hal Airth expires on May 31.

At the county commissioners regular monthly meeting on March 5, County Administrator Randy Harris announced the bids of those who qualified. Attorneys that submitted their qualifications include: Andrew Decker IV, James Prevatt Jr., Hal Airth, all of Live Oak, and Hopping, Green and Sams of Tallahassee.

Prior to conducting interviews, the board will meet to create a scoring mechanism. The commissioners will interview the candidates on Thursday, March 28. The board will then rank the attorneys and begin negotiations in the order in which they were ranked.

“The board will start negotiations with the attorney who has the highest rank. By Florida Statutes, if an agreement is not reached, they move on to the second highest. Once you move on to negotiating with the next attorney, you cannot go back to the previous attorney,” said Harris.

The board will announce the selected candidate once negotiations have been completed.
