Grand jury expected to hear Ortiz case

Live Oak — A Suwannee County Grand Jury is expected to hear the murder case of 16-year-old Anthony Michael Ortiz Friday and to decide whether Ortiz will be tried as an adult, Third Judicial Circuit State Attorney Robert L. “Skip” Jarvis Jr. said.

Ortiz faces first degree murder and armed robbery charges for the April 28 murder and armed robbery of Charles David Napier, 49, at his 6074 127th Place home in Suwannee County.

According to Jarvis, the state is working to impanel a new grand jury in Suwannee County and that grand jury is expected to get the Ortiz case on Friday. It will be up to those selected to determine if Ortiz will be tried as an adult and if he will be tried for first degree murder. In the state of Florida, a capital crime charge must be brought forth by a grand jury, Jarvis explained.

Ortiz is currently being held at a juvenile facility in Gainesville and if he is adjudicated as an adult, he could be transported to the Suwannee County Jail at that time.
