Jasper —
Jasper City Park was filled with folks at the annual N.O.P.E. (Narcotics Overdose Prevention Education) candlelight vigil on Tuesday evening, Oct. 23, hosted by Hamilton County’s Alcohol and Other Drug Prevention Coalition. The program’s purpose is to educate the community about the loss of loved ones from prescription drugs, as well as illegal drugs.
“Coalition members Ruthetta Mitchell, Connie Speights, Brenda Carter, and Michelle Carlton met early in the day to build the wall of pictures that represented those that have lost the battle to narcotics and other drugs throughout the state of Florida,” said Grace McDonald, the coalition’s executive director.
Abbey Taylor offered a brief description of the importance of the coalition, as well as the members’ dedication involved in supporting the community. An uplifting prayer was given by student Jristen Smith, followed by Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office Drug Task Force Deputy Jeramie Cheshire, who spoke about the cause and effect when narcotics are inappropriately used. Cheshire also described a traffic accident caused by the use of Oxycontin, a common prescription drug.
Entertainment was provided by Melody Christian Church of Live Oak and Jesus the Living Word of Deliverance Church of Jasper.
“Both groups provided inspirational church praise, worship and spirituals that were heartfelt and fitting for the occasion,” said McDonald. “Keynote speaker Reverend Patrick Howell of Lily of the Valley Baptist Church presented a moving speech about not being “Set Up” by drugs and other harmful behaviors that seek to destroy us.”
HCSO Sergeant Emily Lumpkin and Sergeant Kathy Curry from Hamilton Correctional Institution assisted the Sheriff’s Explorers and provided and lit candles for all attendees in remembrance of those who lost their lives due to drugs.
The Coalition wishes to thank all those who came out to share in such an important event and for supporting the Coalition and the community.
