Live Oak —
A representative for Klausner Lumber One, LLC is scheduled to meet with county officials today or sometime this week on the contract between the company and Suwannee County, though it is not clear when that meeting will take place.
However, a call to Klausner offices in Myrtle Beach, S.C. revealed that the sawmill contact person, Thomas Mende, is in Florida.
Officials won't state why the company wants to meet with the county.
"I'm not sure what their intentions are at this point," said Ben Brooks, one of the attorney's for Klausner from Smith, Gambrell & Russell, LLP out of Atlanta.
Brooks did state that the company continues to look at other sites to place their sawmill.
"They're looking at other places and options," said Brooks.
Klausner Holding USA, Inc., based in Myrtle Beach, S.C., has applied for an air quality permit with the North Carolina Department of Environmental and Natural Resources for the possibility of constructing a sawmill in Halifax County, N.C.
There is no public hearing scheduled in Halifax, but concerned residents there can request one, or provide written comments concerning the proposed sawmill with the DENR.
The Suwannee County Board of County Commissioners voted 3-1 in favor of the development agreement from the company Tuesday night, Sept. 18. If the contract is signed by Klausner then the company is set to build a state-of-the-art sawmill in western Suwannee County. Commissioner Jesse Caruthers was not at the meeting due to illness. Commissioners Clyde Fleming, Ivie Fowler and Wesley Wainwright voted in favor. Commissioner Phil Oxendine voted against.
Talks between Klausner and the county have been ongoing for almost two years.
The multi-million dollar sawmill’s location site would be located at the US 90 West and I-10 interchange.
