County buys $97K property for catalyst site soil

Live Oak — The Suwannee County Board of County Commissioners agreed to purchase 15 additional acres of land during a recessed meeting on Friday in search of suitable soils. The catalyst site will soon be home to Klausner Lumber One LLC, who will construct a state-of-the-art sawmill.

Before Klausner can begin vertical construction, the county is responsible for developing a soil pad specific to Klausner’s site plan.

At the regular meeting of the county commission on Feb. 19, Harris, bearing bad news, told the board there was not enough suitable soil on the 155 acre site and they must begin looking off site for soil.
During the recessed meeting on Friday, the commissioners decided to purchase three parcels of land adjacent to the catalyst site for $97,000. Although the county will have to pay to clear and grub the property, Harris said it will save the county an enormous amount of money avoiding transportation costs.

About two months ago, the county purchased 10 acres of land that is also adjacent to the catalyst site. The board gave Harris permission to use this property in an effort to obtain suitable soils.

Lastly, the county will be using clay from the catalyst site to fill in a sinkhole on 140th Street, and while the trucks are en route, it will stop and pick up dirt that the county is purchasing and bring it back to the catalyst site.

“The plan is to get majority of what we need from the 25 acres that are near the site,” Harris said.
