A crowning achievement

LHS Tiny Miss, Little Miss named

Mayo — A slight change to the program and a move back to a Friday night performance on the campus of Lafayette High School made the 2012 version of the Tiny and Little Miss LHS Pageant a great success.

This fundraiser put on by the fifth grade teachers from Lafayette Elementary School and a host of volunteers to fund the year end graduation ceremony had 29 young ladies from kindergarten to fifth grade compete this year in the two category pageant. The Tiny Miss crown is presented to the winner from grades kindergarten through second and the Little Miss honor is presented to a girl in the third through fifth grade. In addition to the Tiny and Little Miss titles, an attendant is selected from each of the six grade levels in the pageant.

The pageant opened this year with a dance to the song "Country Girl" made popular by Luke Bryan. With only three days of practice, the 29 contestants led by 2011 Little Miss Audrey Jackson showed no signs of being underprepared as they moved through the routine with large pageant smiles that came natural to this group. Following the dance routine, each of the young ladies came out on stage in their Hornet Pride outfit that they had performed the dance routine in and stated their names before they changed into their evening gowns. The hosts and emcees for the pageant this year were LHS seniors Lindsay O'Steen and Ellen Lashley who stepped off the court as members of the currently undefeated varsity volleyball team to ensure the younger Lady Hornets had a good time. While the transformation was taking place back stage into the gowns, the judges were introduced to those in attendance. Erica Williams, Stephanie Gray and Jennie Sullivan all gave their time this year to provide professional level judging to the pageant.

Once the young ladies completed their wardrobe change they returned to the stage to answer a question selected at random by the emcees. The range of questions from "What is your favorite kind of ice cream?" to "What would you do if another kid was lost at school?" brought a wide range of responses from the assembly crowd. Once each of the 29 contestants had shown their gown and answered their question, it was time for the judges to tally their votes. Each young lady returned to the stage one more time and waited for the announcement. First the six attendants for the 2012 pageant were named. Starting with the kindergarten attendant, in grade order through fifth were, Kelby Grace Lyons, Olivia Driver, Jaley Mosely, McKenzie Winburn, Addison Edwards and Harmony Richardson. With the attendants named, the Tiny and Little Miss winners were announced. This year the Tiny Miss is Avery Buchanan and the Little Miss is Chloe Lamb. The fifth grade wants to thank everyone who helped with this year's pageant and those that were able to attend and support this event.
