Jasper —
The newly constructed senior citizen’s center was approved to be renamed the Corrine Barfield Bryant Building by the Hamilton County Board of County Commissioners at their Feb. 5 meeting.
LaBarfield Bryant of Jasper has been petitioning the county commissioners for quite some time regarding naming the newly constructed senior citizen’s center after his mother Corrine Barfield Bryant who was instrumental in bringing the first senior citizen’s center into the town many years ago.
“My mother, she taught 37 years in this county,” said Bryant.
He said she was the founder of the senior citizen services for Hamilton County and he requested that her name be placed on the outside of the building. Several different options had been suggested at previous board meetings that included a plaque with a large portrait of his mother to be placed in the lobby of the senior citizen’s center or a plaque on the outside wall of the building.
Comm. Beth Burnam told the board she had discussed the issue with Bryant and she learned that after his mother retired from the school system in the 60s, she and Virgie Cone were the two main people who were instrumental in setting up the original senior citizen’s center in the county.
After a short discussion, the board voted and approved naming the building the Corinne Barfield Bryant Building. A sign will be affixed to the outside of the building as soon as possible.
