Live Oak —
This November for the first time since 1946, folks will be able to legally purchase liquor and other spirits in northern Suwannee County.
Suwannee County voters decided in a referendum in August 2011 to become a wet county. On Thursday night, Oct. 26, Live Oak resident Kalpen Patel stood before the Suwannee County Zoning Board seeking permission to place a liquor store at 6824 Suwannee Plaza Blvd., Live Oak; the same shopping center as Walmart, and where the UPS Store was formerly located. The board voted unanimously (4-0) to grant the petition to start his business.
“There was some opposition, but it is a commercial plaza,” Patel stated.
During the meeting, several local residents addressed the board stating why they felt like this proposed location was not suitable for a liquor store.
“Some felt like it was too close to the interstate, and some were concerned for security reasons,” said Patel.
Those speaking up noted that in the recent months, there have been an increased number of burglaries in the area from people hanging out there. Their concern is that placing this store in the plaza would increase loitering and crime.
On Oct. 8, two separate individuals approached the Live Oak Zoning Board requesting permission to place package stores at the current AT&T building, 929 Ohio Ave. South, and at the former location of Brannon’s Meat Market, 636 Ohio Ave. South, both in Live Oak. The city’s zoning committee denied their requests due to the proposed locations being too close to residential homes.
The county board, however, granted Patel permission to open his business, Live Oak Liquor. The panel agreed that this particular location is for commercial use and that it’s not in a housing community.
“I’m really excited,” Patel said. His hopes are to have the store open by Nov. 15.
