Ortiz pre-trial set for Thursday

Live Oak — A pre-trial for Anthony Michael Ortiz, 16, is set for Thursday in the Suwannee County Courthouse.

Ortiz, who will be tried as an adult, faces charges of first degree murder while armed, home invasion robbery while armed with a deadly weapon and tampering with evidence in the April shooting death of Charles David Napier, 49.

“His attorney will either say he is ready for trial in October, or he will ask for a continuance,” stated Trudy Meeks, who serves as the Suwannee County Felony Clerk. Should his attorney state that he is ready, the trial will be tentatively set for Oct. 22-26.

According to local authorities, Ortiz admitted to murdering Napier at his home in Suwannee County on April 28. The Suwannee County Sheriff’s Office stated that Napier was shot nine times with a .40 caliber handgun. The incident took place at Napier’s residence around 7 p.m.

The report by the SCSO also stated that Ortiz talked about what had taken place at Napier’s residence at 6074 127th Place to someone. That person reportedly signed a written statement.
