Live Oak —
Saturday at 4:30 p.m., the Harlem Legends played a benefit game against the Suwannee County All-Stars at the Suwannee County Coliseum.
Part of a benefit for The Boys and Girls Club of Suwannee County, these fantastic athletes with big hearts were there to raise money to help kids and to have a good time
entertaining the audience.
People were showing up early to get good seats, snacks, memorabilia and to watch the players warm up.
The first half, the team to play the Harlem Legends was the Taco Bell All-Stars.
Although often played as a real game, there were some antics going on especially between Harlem Legend Michael “Memphis” Douglas and the referee.
Douglas, in true Globetrotter fashion, was cutting up, keeping the audience laughing and kept delaying the game. Douglas would often stop, run off the court and up into the stands to high five someone or make wisecracks.
At the half, The Harlem Legends were leading with a score of 52-27 and then it was any one’s chance to shoot. A couple of the sponsors, Taco Bell and Krystal, selected those people with their hands raised high to come on to the court to shoot and win some food coupons. Those whose basketball shooting skills were a little off were still rewarded, so no one left empty-handed.
The second half, the Taco Bell Dream Team took on the Legends. Although, there was a lot of joking going on, both the Harlem Legends and SCAS teams were playing some impressive basketball. The Dream Team was able to steal the ball, do some lay-ups, slam dunks and three-pointers just as the Harlem Legends did. There was great playing with just enough comedy to keep it fun for those watching.
The game ended with the Harlem Legends winning with 104-76.
After the game, some of he All-Stars were seen shooting and playing some one-on-one with some of the Harlem Legends, so it seemed no one’s feelings were too hurt by the defeat.
