Mayo Christmas parade route changes approved

Mayo — Changes to the Dec. 8 Mayo Christmas Parade route were approved by the Lafayette County Board of County Commissioners at their meeting on Tues., Nov. 13.

At the meeting Linda Kay Partney from the Chamber of Commerce, who is also the chair of the parade this year, requested a change to the Christmas parade route. Partney advised she had presented her idea to the Mayo town council the previous evening and received their approval.

In years past the parade route down Main Street started at the Assembly of God Church and ended at Veterans Memorial Park. With concerns about limited lighting at the park, people tripping over tree roots, and also concerns about traffic on US 27, Partney suggested a change in the route. It would follow the same route as before, but then continue to the right by Lafayette State Bank, then back up Bloxham Street and over to Courthouse Square on Monroe Street. Santa’s mule-drawn sleigh will then be in an area that is lit up with Christmas decorations and other suitable lighting, making for a more festive and safe place for all the children.

Be on the lookout for Christmas decorations to be going up at the courthouse right after Thanksgiving to get all the townsfolk in the holiday spirit.

Partney noted the change in the parade route will not require any additional permitting from FDOT and after a short discussion the board approved the changes.

The theme for this year’s parade is Old Fashioned Christmas. Any participants in the parade can be judged, including floats and walking troupes, such as the band and the Shriners.

Anyone interested in entering a float in the parade should contact Partney at Old Florida Company Coffee House/Gold ‘N Treasures or get in touch with any chamber member. Line up will take place at 6 p.m. on Dec. 8 and the parade will begin at 7 p.m.

Additionally, the Woman’s Club Quilt Drawing will also take place that same evening at Old Florida Company Coffee House. The winner need not be present to win. All proceeds from the raffle will benefit local community projects.

Now, it’s time to get to work on those fabulous floats as the Christmas parade is just around the corner.
